Four Generations of the HP Chromebook 11

There are currently four generations of notebooks called "HP Chromebook 11" and this article is an attempt to demystify the different versions. On this page, I've summarised the most important information about each generation and also included a compraison chart at the bottom featuring the base model of each generation.

HP Chromebook 11 G1

HP Chromebook 11 G1 Colors The release of the HP Chroembook 11 in late 2013 was met with much anticipation and press coverage. Google marketed it as the laptop "for everyone" and HP seemed poised to take on the Samsung Chromebook which had been selling extremely well. One big selling point of the first generation HP Chromebook 11 was the bright IPS display that was a clear winner over other Chromebooks at the time. HP shipped the Chromebooks in black and also white with blue, red, green, and yellow accents. The device had no HDMI output, but HP's QuickSpecs say that it can support an external monitor via Micro-USB.

The Chromebook charged through a standard Micro-USB AC port similar to most modern mobile phones. However, in December 2013, Google and HP issued a recall for the HP Chromebook 11's charger. According to the recal notice, "the computer's charger can overheat and melt, posing fire and burn hazards." This problem led to the Chromebook being pulled from some retailers right in the middle of the critical US holiday shopping season.

HP Chromebook 11 G2

HP Chromebook 11 G2 In early 2014, not long after the release of the HP Chromebook 11 G1, HP released their second generation 11 inch Chromebook. The second generation models look significantly different and were not sold in multiple colors. It is possible that HP released this new model so quickly due to the bad press over the first generation's charger recall.

Apart from looks, the HP Chromebook 11 G2 doesn't differ much from the first generation. The biggest technical difference is the use of a WLED instead of an IPS screen. The HP Chromebook 11 G2 also weighs slightly more than the first generation models.

HP Chromebook 11 G3

HP Chromebook 11 G3 HP announced the HP Chromebook 11 G3 in mid 2014 and started selling them by fall 2014, just in time for the Christmas shopping season. With this third version of the Chromebook 11, HP changed from the Samsung ARM processor to the much better performing Intel Celeron N2830. They also added an HDMI port for connecting external monitors, upgraded the webcam resolution to 1280x720, and included a USB 3.0 port capable of charging other devices.

HP Chromebook 11 G4

A QuickSpecs PDF appeared on HP's website in June 2015 which details the specifications for an upcoming 4th generation HP Chromebook 11. The new model features a slightly upgraded processor (Intel Celeron N2840) and, more importantly, the re-introduction of a model featuring an IPS display. These models have yet to appear in stores, but are expected for the 2015 holiday season.
