HP Chromebook 14 (14a-nm0, Kompanio 540)
Published on
The HP Chromebook 14 in its 14a-nm0 form is a basic 14-inch ChromeOS laptop for web apps, schoolwork, streaming, and video calls. HP released the series in April 2026 with a MediaTek Kompanio 540, an eight-core Arm chip, in place of the Intel processors in the older HP Chromebook 14a (14a-nf series). Google lists its Auto Update Expiration date as June 2036, so it gets ChromeOS updates for close to ten years. Its 1366x768 screen is the main weakness, and same-chip rivals such as the Lenovo Chromebook m 14 ship a sharper panel and more ports.

A plain 14-inch clamshell with two USB ports
HP lists the 14a-nm0 at 12.82 x 8.48 x 0.72 inches and 2.98 pounds. HP says the keycaps contain up to 85% post-consumer recycled plastic. The full-size keyboard has no backlight on the US retail models, and a sliding shutter covers the 720p webcam. Dual speakers and a dual-array microphone handle calls.
The 14-inch panel runs at 1366x768 with an anti-glare surface, 250 nits of brightness, and 62.5% sRGB color coverage. That resolution shows less text than the 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 screens on other Kompanio 540 Chromebooks, and 250 nits is dim near a bright window. The matte coating helps under classroom lights. HP’s spec sheet also lists FHD IPS and HD touch panels for this series, but the US retail models use the HD non-touch screen.
The laptop has one USB-C port and one USB-A port, both at 5Gbps, plus a 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack. The USB-C port charges the laptop through USB Power Delivery and carries DisplayPort 1.4 to an external monitor at up to 4K 60Hz, so a single-cable USB-C dock or monitor adds the missing ports. There is no HDMI output and no microSD slot. Wireless is MediaTek Wi-Fi 6 (2x2) with Bluetooth 5.4.
Kompanio 540 speed, memory, and battery
The MediaTek Kompanio 540 is an eight-core Arm chip with two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores, paired with Arm Mali-G57 MC2 graphics. It scores about 5,400 on PassMark’s CPU benchmark, which puts it in the basic Chromebook tier, well below the Intel Core and Kompanio Ultra chips that Chromebook Plus models use. It handles Chrome with a moderate number of tabs, Google Workspace, Meet calls, streaming, and light Android apps. Large spreadsheets, a crowded browser, and the Linux development environment push it hard.
Memory is LPDDR5-6400 soldered to the board, either 4GB or 8GB. The 8GB model also moves from 64GB of eMMC to 128GB of UFS storage, which reads and writes faster. The 8GB model is the better buy for a laptop meant to last to 2036, because 4GB fills quickly once a few tabs and an Android app are open, and neither memory nor storage can be upgraded later.
HP rates the two-cell 47Wh battery at up to 17 hours, so expect less with the screen bright or on long video calls. The included 45W USB-C GaN adapter supports HP’s fast charge, which HP rates at about 50% in 45 minutes with the laptop shut down.
Who should buy it
The 14a-nm0 fits students and households whose day runs in Chrome, Google Docs, Gmail, and streaming apps, and who want a light machine with a long update window.
Skip it if you read or edit for hours on the laptop screen, need HDMI for a classroom projector, or run Linux apps. The ASUS Chromebook CM14 (CM1405) and the Lenovo Chromebook m 14 use the same chip with a 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 IPS screen, two USB-C ports, and HDMI. Frequently Asked Questions
How long will the HP Chromebook 14a-nm0 get updates?
Google lists the 14a-nm0 series with an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date of June 2036. After that month it stops receiving ChromeOS security and feature updates.
How is it different from the HP Chromebook 14a with the Intel N100?
The 14a-nf series uses Intel N-series x86 chips and has a June 2033 AUE date. The 14a-nm0 uses the Arm-based MediaTek Kompanio 540 with LPDDR5-6400 memory and gets ChromeOS updates three years longer, through June 2036.
Is the HP Chromebook 14a-nm0 a Chromebook Plus?
No. Google’s Chromebook Plus floor calls for at least 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 1080p IPS screen, and a 1080p webcam. Even the 8GB model misses it on the HD screen and the 720p camera, so it does not get the Plus-only AI features.
Does the HP Chromebook 14a-nm0 have a touchscreen?
No on the US retail models. HP sells HD touch and FHD IPS panels as paid options for the 14a-nm000 on its own store.
What comes in the box?
The laptop and a 45W USB-C GaN power adapter. The US retail models also come with a three-month Google AI Pro trial offer.
